Bit yer quitchin'!

I ain't been a-postin' lately 'cause I done went off and got me a Wii! For those a-you cowpokes what don't know of the device I'm referrin' to, here's the skinny:

You play video games, but instead of a regular-type controller, you use this newfangled remote-control-type controller that responds to your every move! Yes! Your every move!

So, to play tennis, for example, you just swing your arm around like an idiot and whack at the ball on the screen. Throw it like a bowling ball! Swing it like a golf club! Shake it like a Polaroid picture! It's fun for all ages!

And now, stupidly, I'm sore in places I didn't even know I had. I groan like a freshly-beaten 70-year-old just to put on a sweatshirt. It's now very difficult to apply deodorant to one side of my body.

However, despite all that, I love it and I will suggest that every single one of you should get a Wii for yourself - it's silly and fun and video games truly will never be the same after this.

On an entirely different note, I have a hypothetical question for any Star Trek nerds out there:

Gene Roddenberry created many of the alien races in Star Trek as analogs to societies we are familiar with in our own time - much of it was based on post-WWII, early Cold War attitudes. For example, the Klingons represented the Japanese (honor-based society, warmongers), the Vulcans represented the British (foriegn to us, but civilized and allied), and the Federation was clearly the United States (an ideal "melting pot" society that sought to liberate the galaxy).

It can also be said that the Kardassians most closely resemble the Nazis, the Borg could be communist Russia (Cold War era), and the Ferengi could be an amalgam of Hong Kong and Taiwan (with their transaction-based society). I could also argue that the Ferengi may represent China, but I think the first assessment is more accurate.

That all said, here is my question:

Who are the Romulans? I suspect that they are intended as an analog to ancient Rome (the name is kind of a giveaway), but could they not also be Star Trek's Israel? In the series, the Romulans are a highly civilized, yet highly weaponized culture, and their primary goal is to expand the Romulan empire. Possibly it's both Rome and Israel, or something else entirely.

Who are the Romulans?

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

  1. Whoa.

I don't think you can ever tease be about being a nerd ever again.

The political and racial implications of Star Trek civilizations? WOW. Just wow.

Ummmm...It is now my intention to read my BSG forums for several hours.

  2. Just you wait -- soon I'll be making homemade fan videos of Picard and Data in the throes of a violent make-believe passion, created entirely from artfully clipped and re-edited episode footage. They will be lovers...oh, yes...their unrequited, previously unimagined gay space romp shall be exposed to the world via YouTube, and it shall all be set to the soothing musical stylings of Nickelback. It's like the lyrics are speaking to my SOUL!

    Oh, wait...that's you.

  3. Um. You suck.

Good thing I love you despite your inability to appreciate the finely honed nuances of fan-art.

Sammers, you are a gift to the blogosphere. And you know what they say about looking a gift to the blogosphere in the mouth.

Anywho. Keep up the good work.

    "Yes. Cold. Cold and hard."
