Hey...we might've just bought us a house, but more on that later.
Please enjoy this art spec (instructions on what to illustrate) that I received today. The final illustration is supposed to describe the vocabulary word problem to third-graders:
Draw a picture of an African-American teacher standing in front of several empty bookshelves, shrugging his shoulders in an ‘I have a problem’ gesture.
In addition to the potentially racist undertone, do you have ANY idea what an "I have a problem" gesture looks like? If you do, could you draw a picture of it for me?
My drawings always look the same as my "Aw, f~ck it..." sketches.
If you happen to see me whacking myself repeatedly in the face with a poorly written manuscript whilst simultaneously jabbing an-out-of-ink red pen into my neck, you can go ahead and assume (simply by interpreting my gestures) that I do, in fact, have a problem.
Bah!
How are you supposed to show that the African-descended teacher is an American, as against an African of foreign citizenship? I don't think there is a separate color known as "African-American". Better give the teacher a huge American flag lapel pin.
ReplyDeleteOr just ask if you can draw a black teacher instead of an "African-American".
